Makanda Ken McIntyre was a prolific composer, at home in both traditional and modern forms. His songs unfold with a patience and inevitability that mark them as classics. Such was the wellspring of his muse that he often traveled with music-paper notebooks so that he could write down ideas as they came to him. Before he named a composition, he identified it in his notebooks with the date on which it was written. Looking through them, one can see periods in which Makanda was writing one or more compositions a day.
